Chanu served as a cook with the 23rd Sikh Pioneers during the Tibet campaign of 1903 to 1904. As a civilian serving with the regiment he was authorized the bronze version of the Tibet 1903-04 medal that was issued to native camp followers. This medal was authorized on the 1st of February 1905 to be awarded to all who took part in the Tibet Mission and to the troops accompanying it who served beyond Silgari between the 13th of December 1903 and the 23rd of September 1904.
