GENERAL
NOTES:
1.
1.
The
Hampshire Fortress Companies, which ultimately became Army Troops Companies,
were issued regimental numbers in the range of 518000 to 520000.
2.
2.
Regimental
numbers issued to men in the Labour Corps coincide in some cases with regimental
numbers issued to men in the 560th (Hants) Army Troops Company.
3.
3.
Many
men who appear on the 1914-15 Star, British War Medal and Victory Medal rolls do
not have Medal Index Card.
4.
4.
Some
men with Medal Index Cards do not appear on the medal rolls.
5.
5.
Names
in bold type are mentioned in the unit war diary.

Total Number Assigned to the
Company: |
279 |
An Army Troops Company was organized much like a Divisional Field Company
and performed similar service in the field during war.
While the Divisional Field Companies were organically assigned to
division (one per division), the Army Troops Companies were assigned to Field
Armies at a ratio of one per division in the Army.
A Field Company (and probably an Army Troops Company) consisted of the
following personnel:
Officers: 6
Major – 1
Captain – 1
Lieutenants – 4
Non-Commissioned Officers: 23
Company Sergeant Major – 1
Company Quartermaster Sergeant – 1
Farrier Sergeant – 1
Sergeants – 6
Corporals – 7
2nd Corporals – 7
Sappers – 134
Shoeing Smith – 1
Trumpeter – 1
Bugler – 1
Drivers – 37
Batmen – 8
If the 560th Army Troops Company originally consisted of 215
officers and men, then it received 279 minus 215, or 64 replacements during the
war. The distribution of the men
arriving in France, as shown in the table above, is rather unusual.
The unit war diary indicates that the company departed Southampton on the
18th of January 1915; however, the Medal Index Cards only indicate
that 14 men arrived in France on that date.
518024 Corporal Walter W. Gurnsey was in France on the 11th of
January 1915, probably part of the company’s advanced party.
Only 14 men arrived in France on the 18th and 19th
of January and 66 more arrives on the 21st of January, making a total
of 81 men of the company in France in January of 1915.
During August and September of 1915 50 more men arrived making a total of
116 in the company. However, the
main body of the company, 137 men, did not arrive until the 19th and
20th of October 1915 with 11 more arriving on the 23rd of
November 1915. All of these men were
awarded the 1914-15 Star, British War Medal and Victory Medal.
Another 179 men with regimental numbers in the 518XXX range arrived in
France in 1916 or later, according to the Medal Index Cards and were only
awarded the British War Medal and Victory Medal.
These men may have been replacements for men originally assigned to the
company.
The unit war diary records 6 men of the company killed in action or died of wounds and 19 men wounded in action.
