Jay
Royal Engineers
Jay enlisted as a Driver in the Royal Engineers for service in the Great War of 1914-1918. He was posted to the 4th (London) Field Company, R.E., a unit that was later redesignated the 518th (London) Field Company, R.E. His company formed part of the divisional engineers of the 47th Division.
Driver Jay arrived in France on the 4th of September 1915. His company took part in the following major actions in France and Flanders:
Loos: 25 September - 5 October 1915
Pozieres: 23 July - 3 September 1916
Flers-Courcelette: 15-22 September 1916
Le Transloy: 1-18 October 1916
Messines: 7-14 June 1917
Pilckem: 31 July - 2 August 1917
Cambrai: 20 November - 3 December 1917
St. Quentin: 21-23 March 1918
Bapaume: 24-25 March 1918
Ancre: 5 April 1918
Amiens: 8-11 August 1918
Albert: 21-23 August 1918
Bapaume: 31 August - 3 September 1918
Pursuit to Mons: 28 September - 11 November 1918
Driver Jay survived the war and was awarded the 1914-15 Star, British War Medal and Victory Medal for his service.
