Osman Bin Jan was born on the 10th of February 1925 in Batu Karan, near the town of Taiping, in the Province of Perak, Malaya. He enlisted for a period of three years of service in the Royal Engineers on the 13th of September 1948. Sapper Jan's regimental number with the "MYA" prefix indicates that he was classified as "locally employed personel."
Sapper Jan served as a clerk in Headquarters Squadron of the Singapore Engineer Regiment during his time in the Army. He took part in the counter-insurgency operations in Malaya for which he was awarded the General Service Medal 1918-62 with clasp [MALAYA]. The medal was issued to him by authority of Army Order AO/58/50 dated the 23rd of February 1957.
Sapper Jan's commanding officer had this to say about his service:
"A clean and efficient soldier. Was employed for 1-3/4 years on the regimental police, controlling a small detention barracks and large barracks area. He carried out these duties in a very satisfactory manner."
