Pioneer Cook enlisted in the Royal Engineers for service in the Great War of 1914 to 1918. He was posted to the 9th Labour Battalion, R.E., a unit that supported the British Fifth Army in France and Flanders. The 9th Labour Battalion is credited with service during the Battle at Bullecourt from the 3rd to the 17th of May 1917.
Pioneer Cook survived the war and was awarded the
British War Medal and Victory Medal for his service.
