Blanks enlisted as a Pioneer in the Royal Engineers in June of 1915 and arrived in France on the 15th of September 1915.. He was posted to the 7th Labour Battalion, Royal Engineers and served with this unit in France and Flanders with the British Second Army. The 7th Labour Battalion took part in the Battle of Messines from the 7th to the 14th of June 1917.
Pioneer Blanks survived the war and is entitled to the 1914-15 Star, British War Medal and Victory Medal.
