Major HERBERT ALFRED CHARLTON

Herbert Alfred Charlton served in the ranks of the Royal Engineers before receiving his commission. He was promoted to the rank of Lance Corporal on the 4th of February 1930, to Corporal on the 31st of January 1934, and to Lance Sergeant on the 6th of January 1936. At the time he was promoted to the rank of Lance Sergeant, Charlton was serving at the Army Technical School at Gosport.

Charlton received a Regular Army Emergency Commission as a Lieutenant (Quartermaster) in the Royal Engineers on the 7th of April 1943. He was promoted to the rank of Captain on the 7th of April 1946 and was subsequently granted a Regular Army Short Service Commission and promoted to the rank of Major (Quartermaster) on the 28th of September 1953.

For his service Major Charlton was awarded the 1939-45 Star, the France & Germany Star, the Defence Medal, War Medal, 1953 Coronation Medal and Long Service and Good Conduct Medal (GVIR) with bar [REGULAR ARMY].

Herbert Alfred Charlton died on the 4th of December 1984.
