Sapper Crippin served in the 115th Railway Company, Royal Engineers, a unit assigned to the General Headquarters in Palestine. The company took part in the three major battles at Gaza from 26-27 March, 17-19 April, and 27 October - 7 November 1917.

Sapper Crippin survived the war and was awarded the 1914-15 Star, British War Medal and Victory Medal.
