Sydney George Fenwick was born at Christchurch, Hampshire. He enlisted as a Sapper in the Royal Engineers for service in the Great War of 1914-1918 as was posted to the 1/1st Home Counties Field Company, R.E. with the 8th Division.

Fenwick's company went to France and took part in the major actions at Neuve Chapelle (10 March 1915), Aubers (9 May 1915), and Albert (1 July 1916). Sapper Fenwick was killed in action on the 23rd of October 1916 while his company was engaged in the final stages of the Battle of the Somme.

Sydney George Fenwick had a brother, 532338 Sapper Albert Fenwick, who also served in the 1/1st Home Counties Field Company, R.E. Albert Fenwick was killed in action on the 27th of May 1918 at the Battle of Arras.
