Thomas Cardwell Campbell was born in Scotland. At the time of his enlistment for service in the Great War of 1914-1918, his next of kin was listed as Mrs. Jane Craig of 49 Ravel Row in Parkhead, Glasgow, Scotland. Campbell had prior service in the 50th Regiment prior to enlisting to serve in the war.

Campbell enlisted in the 3rd Pioneer Battalion (formerly the 48th Battalion) at Victoria, British Columbia on the 18th of March 1915. He departed Montreal for France on board SS Grampian on the 1st of July 1915.

For his service during the Great War, Corporal Campbell was awarded the British War Medal and Victory Medal.
