Leonard Sampson Bydawell was born on the 26th of March 1889 on Totteridge Road, High Wycombe, Buckinghamshire. He was the eldest son of John Bydawell (4688 Sapper, Royal Engineers) and Annie Randall Bydawell (nee Sampson). As a child he resided with his parents at 8 Mead Road in Uxbridge.

Leonard enlisted in the Royal Engineers and served in the Great War of 1914-1918. He went over to France on the 15th of August 1914 with the original British Expeditionary Force (The Old Contemptibles). He survived the war and earned the 1914 Star and bar, British War Medal and Victory Medal.
