Botha attested for service in the South African Engineer Corps at Cape Town, South Africa on the 12th of February 1942. He was immediately posted to the South African Engineer Training Center at Zonderwater.

Following a period of training Sapper Botha was posted for war duty with the 11th Field Company, S.A.E.C. He sailed for Egypt and disembarked at Suez on the 4th of May 1943. He served with the 11th Field Company in both Egypt and Libya.

On the 16th of November 1943 Botha was posted to 22 Corps Field Park Company, S.A.E.C. in Italy where he remained until the 3rd of November 1945 when he was flown back to South Africa. For his service during the war, Corporal Botha was awarded the 1939-45 Star, Africa Star, Italy Star, Defence Medal and Africa Service Medal.
