David Binnie enlisted as a Sapper in the Royal Engineers and was posted to the 35th Army Troops Company. This company was assigned to General Headquarters with the British forces in Palestine and took part in the following campaigns:

Gaza: 26-27 March 1917, 17-19 April 1917 and 27 October - 7 November 1917
El Mughar: 13 November 1917

Sapper Binnie survived the war and was awarded the British War and Victory Medals.
