George Alcorn enlisted in the Royal Engineers for service in the Great War of 1914-1918. He was assigned to "F" Corps Signal Company, Royal Engineers, a unit that served with the British VI Corps in the following actions during the war:

Bapaume: 24-25 March 1918
Arras: 28 March 1918
Ancre: 5 April 1918
Albert: 21-23 August 1918
Bapaume: 31 August to 3 September 1918
Havrincourt: 12 September 1918
Pursuit to Mons: 28 September to 11 November 1918
Cambrai: 8-9 October 1918
Selle: 17-25 October 1918
Sambre: 4 November 1918

Sapper Alcorn survived the war. For his service during the war he awarded the British War Medal and Victory Medal.
