11466 Corporal J. CHANNON
Royal Engineers

by
Lieutenant Colonel Edward De Santis ©2008

Corporal Channon was attached to the Bengal Sappers and Miners and served in India against the Jowaki Afridis. The Jowaki Afridis occupied the territory between Peshawar and the Kohat Pass. They had, as border tribes go, been quite well behaved until the British decided to construct a road through their territory. The tribesmen became truculent, so much so that it became necessary to send two expeditions under Brigadiers C.P. Keyes and C.C.G. Ross to deal with them.

Corporal Channon served in No. 4 Company of the Bengal Sappers and Miners with Brigadier-General Ross's force (Peshawar Column). For his service in the campaign Channon was awarded the India General Service Medal 1854 with clasp [JOWAKI 1877-8].
